Oklahoma City National Memorial Mobilizes PR Volunteers In Media Battle With Columbine Memorial Service
According to PRWeek Magazine, PR volunteers "labored just as diligently as their Denver counterparts" to make sure that the April 19th dedication of the Oklahoma City National Memorial, held on the fifth anniversary of the bombing that left 168 dead, "didn't get lost in the shuffle." About 50 members of the PR Society of America volunteered to get the message out, and succeeded in credentialing more than 1,200 members of the press for the dedication ceremonies. The Oklahoma City National Memorial includes "The Field of Chairs" sculpture and a reflecting pool next to a wall with "9:01" carved above its entrance.
Littleton, CO's ceremony took place on April 20th, and used balloons, bells and temporary memorial crosses. No permanent Columbine memorial has been established yet.
Vying for press attention was the opening of a new Branch Davidian Church, near Waco, TX, and its memorial to the 82 sect members killed exactly two years before the Oklahoma City disaster. April 20th also marked the 85th Anniversary of the Ludlow Massacre, in Ludlow, CO.
