City Plans to Sell Weeki Wachee Mermaid Spring
The City of St. Petersburg plans to sell Weeki Wachee and the adjacent Buccaneer Bay to raise over $14 million for "for future parks, recreation opportunities, preservation and beautification."
Weeki Wachee springs covers 430 acres, purchased to provide water to St. Petersburg in 1940. If sold to the Southwest Florida Water Management District, the state agency that protects the water supply, it is proposed that the agency will negotiate a long-term lease with Weeki Wachee Springs, L.L.C., allowing continued habitation by mermaid and pirate-themed water attractions on the property.
