Big Bamboo Lounge to close in 2003
A unique destination in Kissimmee, FL, once described to us by a lady at the Orlando Chamber of Commerce as "a crummy old bar," is scheduled to close in February 2003. Run by crusty founder Bruce Muir before his death, the "Boo" was a strange mix of love and neglect.
Big Bamboo's parking lot is dirt, riddled with potholes as big as bomb craters that are filled with Florida swamp water. A watchtower stands out front -- weathered, abandoned, and about to collapse -- and the shattered edges of what was once a big yellow sign stands there as well -- a sign that has long been blasted out of existence.
While the outside crumbled, the inside, about the size of a two-car garage, was a cozy clutter of disney memorabilia, liquor and Big Band music.
Muir's will apparently decrees that the place be shut down three years after his death. [thanks to Dave Mitchell for the tip]
