Weeki Wachee on its way out?
According to a recent article in the St. Petersburg Times, Weeki Wachee Springs is sinking irrevocably into a sea of red ink. The attraction may close, or, at best, restrict its famous mermaids to weekends-only performances.
Hernando County has formed a "project team" to explore the idea of county ownership and to "be prepared to take over should the opportunity arise," according to the Times, "if the Southwest Florida Water Management District and Weeki Wachee Springs [can] agree on the value of the attraction and strike a deal." But the County commissioners do not regard Weeki Wachee's mermaids as a valuable asset. They covet its pre-fab water slide park. "In addition to the water park, county officials envision using the site as a conference center, a music venue, and for environmental education."
