Museum planned to remember fallen Man of the Mountain
A year after the New Hampshire's giant natural stone formation, the Old Man of the Mountain, broke loose and slid to its doom, plans are underway to remember the landmark symbol. An Old Man of the Mountain Museum will be created at the base of Cannon Mountain at Franconia Notch, exhibiting photos and artifacts, including pieces of the great face itself.
The Museum of New Hampshire History, Concord, NH, is currently displaying a small collection of items and artifacts in their lobby relating to the Old Man of the Mountain.
Update - July 2005: Tourism is down as much as 50% in Franconia Notch since they lost face. A museum is still under development. The idea of installing an artificial Old Man of the Mountain with observation ports in the eyes was rejected by a special state commission.
