Courage of draft dodgers to be remembered with bronze statue
Activists in Nelson, British Columbia plan to erect a memorial that will salute (or at least, send a sloppy, civilian-style wave to) 50-125,000 Americans who bravely fled to Canada to avoid the US military draft during the Vietnam War. The bronze sculpture will also honor Canadians who took in the political refuges and helped them resettle. The memorial will be unveiled in July 2006 as part of a festival fondly celebrating the anti-war movement.
