Master and Commander ship calls San Diego home
A replica 18th century British warship, used in the Russell Crowe movie "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," is a popular tourist attraction in San Diego. It was recently purchased by the Maritime Museum of San Diego from 20th Century Fox. Under the agreement, the studio can borrow the ship, the HMS Surprise, for sequels and other productions. The ship has been in San Diego at the North Embarcadero since last December.
The HMS Surprise used to be the Tall Ship "Rose," a sail training vessel built in Nova Scotia in the 1980s. It was berthed in Bridgepost, Connecticut for years as a tourist attraction, and participated in Tall Ship sailing events.
The San Diego museum plans to renovate the ship so that it can sail again by 2007.
Other seaworthy movie ships navigating tourist hot spots include the HMS Bounty II (from the 1962 Mutiny on the Bounty, starring Marlon Brando), Fall River, Massachusetts (winters in St. Pete, Florida); the replica slave ship Amistad, Mystic, Connecticut; and the pipsqueak pirate ship from Time Bandits, Big Bear Lake, California.
