George Washington, Our God
National Museum of American History, Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, DC
Half nude, wearing a beach towel with his big toes sticking out of his sandals, the blank-eyed Washington resembles a piece of casino art. The statue was commissioned by Congress and sat on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol for years before it was mercifully moved indoors.
Roman emperor or Greek god? The aspirational misfire was sculpted by Horatio Greenough, who labored for almost a decade and said he was inspired by statues of Zeus.
