I was informed by the Parks Department that the "World's Largest Gold Nugget" sign was removed by the city because the "Nugget" is just a gold-painted boulder and not a replica. It is considered by the locals to be silly and unrealistic, so they decided to remove all markings and maintenance and focus their efforts elsewhere. They don't know how it came to be, but if found to be of any significance they would return the sign. Too bad, as users of Roadside America go out of their way to see such oddities.

[David Kamada, 10/23/2012]The world's largest gold mining pan is a fun photo-op. Located near the church, just one short block from the Iditarod finish line.
[Wendy, 09/14/2013]The pan is roughly 20 feet in diameter, dwarfing anyone who stands next to it. The statues represent "The Three Lucky Swedes" who discovered gold in Nome in 1898. May 2020: We've been informed that there's another giant gold pan, possibly the world's largest, in Quesnel, British Columbia, Canada -- since 1987.

The gold prospectors who settled Alaska, and really all American pioneers, were silly and unrealistic, too.
