Huge spider sits atop a porch roof in a quiet Pittsburgh neighborhood. What started as a Halloween attraction has turned into a year-round arachnid who often dresses up for the seasons.

A dead-end street, only 250 feet long, privately paved in 1914 with 26,000 wooden blocks. Pittsburgh wanted to pave it over with asphalt in 1985, but the people who live on the street convinced the city to restore it instead.

The tour feels more like an exploration; the building itself boasts 22-rooms, an observatory, secret passages, an Italian wine cellar and cave, and an indoor pool in a room designed to look like you're in the tropics. Each room has so many unique items and features; there's a surprise around every corner. Or behind every bookcase...

The L.L. Bean at this Pittsburgh-area mall hosts a ten-or-so-foot-tall boot outside its doors, similar to the footwear giants in Maine and elsewhere. A sign warns, "Do not climb on the boot."

Multi-millionaire "Chuck" Brown had the house built not all that long ago, from 1976 to 1982, then died at age 62. It took years to catalog everything inside, then Bayernhof opened to visitors in 2004, which had always been Chuck's wish.
