Blowing Rock: Floating Indian
Blowing Rock, North Carolina
Blowing Rock is on the edge of a cliff 3,000 feet above Johns River Gorge, where a strong wind upwells.
The legend, in brief: A despondent Indian brave -- torn between his crush on an Indian maiden and his manly responsibilities -- threw himself to certain death off of this rocky precipice. The maiden prayed at the outcropping until the brave was blown back into her arms!
The logo of this popular tourist trap immortalizes that amazing moment.
From that day, it was said, a perpetual strong wind welled up over the rock. We recall, as kids, spending time tossing all of our accumulated car trash -- fast food wrappers and paper cups -- into the breeze to see if the legend was true.
