White Squirrel Festival

Brevard, North Carolina

Brevard calls itself "Home of the White Squirrels," although they have dark eyes and are not true albinos. A "White Squirrel Research Institute" at the local college has charted the geographic distribution of pale critters in their region, whose origins are said to be either China or an island off of Hawaii. They arrived in town, according to local lore, with a traveling circus.

Brevard holds an annual White Squirrel Festival around Memorial Day Weekend, attended by white squirrel mascot, Pisgah Polly. There's also a Miss White Squirrel beauty pageant. Souvenirs are available year-round at the White Squirrel Gift Shoppe.
