Lumberjack Muffler Man - Inside

Field review by the editors.

Flagstaff, Arizona

Type: Bunyan (20 ft. tall)

Indoor Lumberjack statue.

Arm position: Standard

Accessories: Double-sided Ax

Northern Arizona University owns two Bunyan Muffler Men, originals from the Lumberjack Restaurant (where the earliest of Muffler Men appeared). The two statues were donated to the University's Lumberjack Stadium in the late 1970s when the restaurant got new owners who renamed it Granny's Closet.

The Muffler Men have been pressed into service supporting school spirit for the Lumberjacks, who now play in the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome.

One statue stands outside the Dome entrance. The indoor lumberjack is protected from the weather, though not from stray basketballs. He seems less monumental, dwarfed by the volume of the stadium. And someone decided it was smart to stuff his wall with corporate sponsorships and ads.

Visitors in 2019 noted that the indoor lumberjack is missing, reportedly displaced during 2018 stadium renovations, and while outside his head was stolen.
