Popeye Statue: Outdoor (Gone)
Siloam Springs, Arkansas
Arkansas is a hotbed of Popeye tributes. There is a Popeye statue reported in Lowell, Arkansas, in front of the Allen Foods plant where they make Popeye brand spinach. We failed to locate it on a 2006 road trip.
Further south we had better luck at the Allen Canning Company in Springdale. The statue stands along the road, more of a regulation-looking Popeye. The figure is only about four feet tall, on a concrete pedestal. His "pop" eye is painted with a demented sparkle.
Popeye's missing his large corn-cob pipe, but a tipster reported that the pipe could be seen in the "portable drug bust information tent that the Benton County Sheriff's office sets up at local county fairs." Apparently it was confiscated from a drug user using it to smoke something stronger than spinach.
August 2014: Springdale's Popeye the Sailor Man statue was moved to a new home in Siloam Springs, repainted, and back on public display by summer's end. June 2018: The statue is reported gone since 2017 after the business was sold.
