Wild Blueberry Land: World's Largest Blueberry
Columbia Falls, Maine
The "Blueberry Dome," and most of the rest of Wild Blueberry Land, was built in 2001 by Dell and Marie Emerson, who are also Maine blueberry farmers and chefs. The attraction serves as a gift and coffee shop, as well as an outlet for the Emerson's blueberry jams, jellies, sauces, and vinegars -- and fresh-made blueberry scones, muffins, cookies, and ice cream. The new year's crop usually doesn't arrive until mid-August, although Wild Blueberry Land is open from June to mid-October.
From the outside, Wild Blueberry Land evokes a berry-crazed version of the now-gone Xanadu: Home of the Future, a look that would benefit any roadside fruit stand hoping to grab the attention of passersby. Inside the Blueberry Dome, the attraction smells of home-cooking, and we recommend its Blueberry Throne photo-op: a chair painted gold with a big crown as its headrest, and a stuffed moose head suspended overhead.
