Big Bald Eagle Head
Alpena, Michigan
The fierce-looking bald eagle head, 14 feet high, was sculpted by Tom Moran of Moran Iron Works. It debuted in Onaway's July 4th parade in 2000. As was Tom's custom at that time, he trucked the head to several other Michigan parades (it won "Best Overall" at the 2000 Cherry Royale Parade in Traverse City) before donating the eagle to a local foundation. The foundation then gave it to the Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan in Alpena, which displays the head on its front lawn.
The eagle's stainless steel feathers have proved durable in Michigan weather, making this one of Tom's better-preserved early sculptures.
