Metal Sign Man
Mount Airy, North Carolina
This formerly animated waving metal guy was probably built in the 1950s. Ten feet tall, he was originally dressed as a gas station attendant and known as "Big Man" (The name was painted on his shirt). In the early 2000s his waving arm fell off at the rusted elbow -- possibly when he was moved to his current location -- and awkwardly reattached. He became "Pack's Produce" Man for a few years, but by 2010 he assumed a third identity and color scheme when the business changed to Young Enterprises. Although oddly disfigured, and despite several repainted outfits, the metal sign man has always retained his cheerful smile.
