World's Largest Pistachio Nut

Field review by the editors.

Alamogordo, New Mexico

Like wineries in California's Napa Valley, some pistachio farms in New Mexico's Tularosa Basin have added roadside art to attract travelers to stop and sample their bounty. The most impressive example of this is the World's Largest Pistachio Nut, unveiled in 2008. It's also a memorial to Tom McGinn, who had died the previous year, and who had founded McGinn's Pistachio Tree Ranch, where the big nut stands.

Travelers are mesmerized by its bright colors, in contrast to the brown palette of other giant nut tributes.

The 30-foot-tall pistachio is made of cement, and stands end-up on a pole anchored in nine feet of concrete. The idea for it came from Tim McGinn, Tom's son. According to the Alamogordo Daily News, Tim saw the big nut as the perfect tribute to his dad, who loved visiting outlandish roadside attractions.

A bronze plaque at the base of the nut states that, "Tom dreamed big, expected big, and accomplished big things. He would have said the monument is not big enough!"
