Statue Of Seabiscuit
Saratoga Springs, New York
Seabiscuit was a race horse that no one expected to win, but he did. As an underdog, he attracted devoted fans who normally cared nothing about horse racing. He was voted Horse of the Year in 1938, and he retired in 1940 as the most popular race horse in the world.
In that year sculptor Hughlette "Tex" Wheeler cast two bronze statues from Seabiscuit: one stands at Santa Anita racetrack in Arcadia, CA; the other is in Saratoga Springs, outside the National Museum of Racing.
Near the statue, you can see an artifact from the race course in Maryland where Seabiscuit beat War Admiral: the ornate 19th century wrought iron gates preserved after the Pimlico clubhouse burned down in 1966.
