Big Gus: 20,000 lb Longhorn
Panama City Beach, Florida
Big Gus has stood in front of Angelo's Steak Pit since 1970, when owner George Butchikas unveiled him to catch drivers' attention after the highway was widened to four lanes. He was named for George's dad, Angelo "Gus" Butchikas, who opened Angelo's Steak Pit in 1958.
Gus gets his 10-ton weight because his hollow legs are filled with concrete to anchor him to his pedestal. When Hurricane Michael slammed Panama City Beach in October 2018 Big Gus's legs stayed put but the rest of him was snapped off. Six months later he was back in place, repaired, and with a fresh coat of paint.
