Statue of Gene Autry Singing to his Horse
Los Angeles, California
For years Gene Autry was Hollywood's top singing cowboy (He was discovered by Roy Rogers, a slightly older singing cowboy). Gene invested his money well, became a billionaire, and eventually opened the Autry National Center of the American West (renamed the Autry Museum of the American West in 2015), an impressive assembly of Wild West relics, art, and Hollywood cowboy memorabilia (One gallery displays a revolver owned by Teddy Roosevelt and the gun Doc Holliday carried in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral).
Gene was still very much alive in 1988 when David Spellerberg unveiled his bronze statue of Gene singing to his movie horse, Champion, in the museum's open-air courtyard. It's titled "Back in the Saddle Again," which was Gene's signature cowboy song -- although he's better known to the world as the singer of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Here Comes Santa Claus."
