Tunnel Log: Drive Thru a Fallen Sequoia
Sequoia National Park, California
Even guilt-plagued tree-lovers should be able to enjoy driving through a tree that was already dead when the hole was cut. The giant sequoia, 21 feet wide, fell over and across Crescent Meadow Road in 1937. Rather than go to the trouble of chopping the tree apart to clear the road, Sequoia National Park wisely bored a hole through the log, 8 feet high and 17 feet wide, and turned it into a visitor attraction. It's still in use, although tourists with Winnebago-size vehicles have to use a bypass.
