Sculpture Made Of Over 200 Boats
Las Vegas, Nevada
An assemblage of over 200 watercraft -- canoes, kayaks, rowboats, sailboats, surfboards -- is the sculptural centerpiece of the Las Vegas CityCenter roundabout. Artist Nancy Rubins created the work -- called "Big Edge" -- in 2009 (she's built other boat sculptures before and since), attaching the colorful hulls together with steel wire to form a spiky, flower-like arrangement.
It's unusual, but in the middle of the desert this might have been more striking. At CityCenter it's sandwiched between hotel towers, hidden off the strip. A veteran hotel employee a block away had never heard of it (though maybe us describing it as "a big metal flower" would have had better effect than "a big pile of boats.")
It's not an easy landmark to visit -- unless you're staying at one of the hotels around the elevated traffic circle. There's no spot for tourist parking, but you might slowly drive around a few times and snap pix on the fly.
