Proper Role of Man and Fish Statue
Tacoma, Washington
Unlike the scandalous fish statue in nearby Des Moines, this sculpture portrays a fish as a token of love, not an object of interspecies passion. Its official name is Ribarski Pripovijest ("A Fish Story"), and it was unveiled on the sidewalk outside Slavonian Hall, in Tacoma's "Old Town" district, to mark the 2001 centennial of the Slavonian-American Benevolent Society.
Sculpted by Larry Anderson, known as the Norman Rockwell of Tacoma, the sculpture shows a local Croatian fisherman of 1901 presenting a fat salmon to his happy wife. She rests her hand on his heart; he smiles proudly. Good eats in Old Town tonight!
