Smiley Face Water Tower.

Smiley Face Water Tower

Field review by the editors.

Wells, Michigan

Wells is a small town contiguous to Escanaba, in the upper peninsula of Michigan on the north shore of Lake Michigan. The municipal grinner is east and south of the Gardens Of Rest cemetery, about two blocks east of M-35/US-2 (towards the lake).

When we visited, Wells had painted a big Smiley Face on its water tower, directing the happiness toward Lake Michigan, not toward the landlubbers who drive past on US Hwy 2. We thought maybe the town had run out of paint. But years later, an observant tipster reported that the water tower featured smiling visages on both sides.
