Birthplace of Sports Illustrated Monument
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Pine Lakes Country Club opened in Myrtle Beach in 1927. It was here, in 1954, that Sports Illustrated was invented. The man behind it was Henry Luce, who was not a sports fan, but who was the publisher of Life, Time, and Fortune magazines. Luce ordered 67 of his writers and editors to Pine Lakes to come up with a weekly sports magazine that he could sell. Most of them thought the idea was crazy, but Luce was powerful enough to get the magazine distributed and rich enough to absorb its poor sales in its first years. Today, a monument stands next to the clubhouse where the magazine was born, and Pine Lakes is proud of its place in publishing history.
