Boy and the Boot
Hershey, Pennsylvania
Wealthy chocolate-maker Milton S. Hersey had a mansion built in 1908 in his namesake town for himself and his wife, Kitty. She liked to sit in the garden, by a fountain in a flower-bordered pool, but she would get sprayed whenever the wind shifted. The fountain was moved several times, but Kitty still got wet and unhappy. So in 1913 the old fountain was ripped out and replaced with a much less energetic Boy with a leaky Boot fountain.
Kitty didn't enjoy it for long; she died in 1915. The Boy was moved to Hershey Park, then the Hershey Zoo Reptile House (an odd location), and finally to the Hershey Rose Garden (now Hershey Gardens) in 1938. He stood there for 60 years before being replaced with a look-alike replica in 1998.
The original Boy still exists, but he's currently in storage downtown in the Hershey Story Museum.
