Big John: Grocery Clerk
Eldorado, Illinois
Big John, the grocery clerk colossus, is arguably the perfect poster child for the promotion of crisis consumption. With multiple bags of groceries that could crush any SUV parked below -- how bad could things be?
The Big John grocery store chain first commissioned these grinning fiberglass mascots in the 1960s. They stand 28 feet tall -- larger than Muffler Men -- and tower over their assigned parking lots holding bags of overflowing food products.
Over time the Big John chain shrank, and many of the statues were taken down or sold off to other businesses. Eldorado's Big John is one of only a few that continue to represent stores with the original name.
