Chatty Belle, Talking Cow

Field review by the editors.

Neillsville, Wisconsin

Whether or not Chatty Belle still talks is a matter of some debate (we've received reports from both sides). But there's no denying that for years, those who traveled to Neillsville (fourth in the state in milk production), and who dropped a quarter in the coin box next to Chatty, would get a pro-dairy lecture in a soothing woman's voice. Chatty revealed that she was seven times as large as the average Holstein, that a cow her size would produce over 270 pounds of milk a day, and that your best food value lies in one hundred percent natural Wisconsin Dairy cheeses.

For years Chatty also talked of Bullet, her nearby mute baby son (another fiberglass statue). But Bullet disappeared in 2003, rumored to have been packed away after being attacked by vandals. The loss of Bullet also removed an important visual reference, as he was the size of a normal Holstein.

By 2018 Bullet was no longer mentioned in Chatty's chat, and the clerk in the nearby World's Fair Pavilion gift shop (more on that below) explained that he had "gone off to college."

Also positioned next to Chatty at one time was "The Golden Giant," more commonly known as the World's Largest Replica Cheese. It weighed over 17 tons and was displayed in its own custom glass-sided refrigerated tractor-trailer. But it vanished in 2005; sold to a collector who reportedly only wanted the truck.

One thing that is still here to keep Chatty company is the futurrific Wisconsin Pavilion from the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. It now serves as the broadcasting center for WCCN radio, and it has a gift shop that sells post cards and cheese.
