Dinosaur Leg Bone Monument

Field review by the editors.

Kenton, Oklahoma

One of best spots in America to dig up dinosaur bones has been Cimarron County in the Oklahoma Panhandle. The prehistoric boneyard was discovered accidentally in 1931 by highway workers quarrying stone for the construction of US 64. Paleontologists heard the news, dug several more quarries, and unearthed 18 tons of dino bones by the time everyone was through.

The most fruitful digging spot was just off of what is now Hwy 325. Fifteen thousand bones came out of one pit, and in recognition the diggers left a single six-foot-long femur, mortared upright onto a concrete slab, atop a small hill just off the road. The monument is unmarked except for a weathered "Dinosaur Quarry" sign by the shoulder, a yellow trash can, and a little path that leads up the hill. But the anonymous sentinel bone is big enough to be visible from the road.
