Restaurant Named for a Cannibal

Colorado shows its appreciation for one of its favorite sons at the Alferd Packer Restaurant and Grill, which lies below the main floor of the Memorial Center at the University of Colorado in Boulder, directly beneath the Glenn Miller lounge. Alferd, trapped in a Colorado blizzard in 1874, ate his five traveling companions. He subsequently served 18 years in prison, then was pardoned and became a model citizen. He was especially loved by children, and never ate any of them.

A small, marble bust of Packer, unveiled by Colorado governor Roy Romer, sits on a pedestal at the hub of the grill. The restaurant is also known for "Al's Greens," its vast salad bar, and its El Canibal burrito is said to be the biggest in Boulder.
