Maman.

Creepy Giant Spider

Field review by the editors.

Ottawa, Ontario

Louise Bourgeois was a French-born American artist who labored in obscurity until she reached her seventies, when she became the champion of "feminist identity art."

She said that her goal was to bother people. To reach that goal she created a number of giant, creepy spiders, which art centers fell over themselves to exhibit. Perhaps her biggest and creepiest is the one here, black and withered and wrinkly and 30 feet tall, carrying a sac of white marble eggs. Louise titled it Maman ("Mommy").
