Lackawanna Coal Mine Tours
Scranton, Pennsylvania
Slope #190 was an anthracite coal mine that first opened in 1860. Now it's open to tourists who ride mine cars down to 300 feet beneath the surface, then get out and walk around with a real miner as a guide. Wander the tunnels, see the coal veins, marvel at the stuffed mule pulling a car of coal and the baffling "Mule Boy" dummy, who looks like a denim-clad furry space alien. Your miner guide will probably turn off the feeble lights at some point, leaving you in total darkness. You'll be perfectly safe -- but for peace of mind you may not want to be standing too close to that Mule Boy....
