Safety City, Tiny Streets for Young Drivers

Field review by the editors.

Lubbock, Texas

Built in 1993, Safety City is where Lubbock sends its kids to learn about traffic safety. It's a miniature Lubbock, located in a well-tended, tree-shaded downtown park, with kid-scale streets fronted with minimalist banks, gas stations, and apartment buildings.

We are envious of the children of Lubbock. The pedestrian and bicycle courses at Safety City may be worthwhile, but as a kid you'd want to graduate to the automobile class, where you're given your own pedal truck to pump furiously (but safely) across Safety City's bridges and down its empty boulevards.
