Home of the White Squirrels
Kenton, Tennessee
Kenton has a population of about 200 pink-eyed albino squirrels frolicking in its parks and trees. Other towns boast about having white squirrels as well, and when we asked about that, Kenton residents insisted that its squirrels "have been here the longest" and that they were left by a "gypsy caravan" in 1869 -- three years before the town was even founded!
Is Kenton, we asked, where the other towns got their white squirrels? "Well, they had to come from somewhere."
Kenton reveres its furry mascots, tagging "White Squirrel" onto the names of streets and businesses, and anyone who even annoys a white squirrel risks a stiff fine.
