Burial Mound at the Zoo
Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii
An eight-sided, modern-day burial mound -- outside the entrance of the Honolulu Zoo -- holds about 200 human skeletons dug up during various Waikiki construction projects. It has its own plaque, decorative fence, and walkway for visitors.
The mound (called Kahi Hali'a Aloha, "the place of cherished memories") cost a quarter-million dollars to build, and has room for roughly 1,400 more displaced skeletons. It's a first-come, first-buried mound. The choice western side, facing the Waikiki beach, has already been filled.
