The otter statue in Adams Park.

Otto the Big Otter

Field review by the editors.

Fergus Falls, Minnesota

Fergus Falls is the seat of Otter Tail County, but that doesn't quite explain the town's enthusiastic alignment with a ground-hugging woodland creature. Posed as if sniffing for a 150-ft.-tall fur trapper, the Big Otter -- its name is Otto -- squats in Adams Park.

Otto was built by local high schoolers in 1972 as their contribution to the town's centennial celebration. He's 40 feet long, and made of concrete-covered metal that rings when you tap it.

A sign in front warns: "Stay off the otter. Not responsible for accidents."

Sniffing towards the lake.
