Anchor of the Ehime Maru.
Memorial to Sub vs. Fishing Boat Tragedy
Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii
On February 9, 2001, nine miles offshore from Honolulu, a U.S. nuclear sub (on a public relations cruise for VIPs) surfaced under the Japanese fishing training boat Ehime Maru, slicing it open and sinking it in about five minutes. Nine people on the boat died, including four Uwajima Fisheries High School trainees.
There's a memorial in Kakaako Waterfront Park (AKA Point Panic Park) remembering the tragic training ship mishap. The display, in polished, black granite features the anchor from the doomed boat, and inscriptions in Japanese and English.
