Hollow Head
St. Louis, Missouri
When Citygarden park opened in downtown St. Louis in 2009, its most visible artwork was Eros Bendato (Eros Bound), a dismembered head of a bronze statue that would have been 97 feet tall had the rest of it ever existed. Sculpted by Igor Mitoraj, the head is of Eros, Greek god of desire, wrapped in bandages that may have symbolically imprisoned its feelings until it apparently blew up from holding them in too long.
The deeper meaning of the artwork is unimportant to most park visitors, who simply enjoy the big, hollow head as a prop for gag photos.
