Tunnel of Automatic Fish

Field review by the editors.

Green Bay, Wisconsin

Steve Fairfield, an artist, and Patrick Marcus, an electrical engineer, have transformed a drab 110-foot-long concrete pedestrian tunnel into an art piece named "Interactive Immersion." Walkers, joggers, bike riders using the tunnel now trigger motion sensors hooked to 22 translucent fish sculptures attached along the walls (the fish are walleye, trout, etc., typical for the region). Multi-colored LEDs flash inside each fish, creating the illusion that they're swimming.

The piece was chosen "to celebrate the natural beauty of the Fox River," according to its sponsor. It's a bit of artistic license; we're pretty sure that most natural fish don't flash like disco balls. But we wish they did.
