Wagon Ho Pioneer Giant
Hayward, California
The Wagon Ho restaurant chain distinguished itself from all the other desperately themed chain eateries of the mid-1960s with its fake wagon facade and huge pioneer wagon driver. The bearded pioneer giant held a whip and the reins for his horses. After the chain went out of business, a few of the giant figures survived. This fellow, from Birmingham's Eastwood Mall, did a post-Wagon Ho stint at Kelly's Hamburgers. After that establishment was shuttered, the giant toughed it out solo in a neglected construction business yard in Moody, Alabama.
He was eventually rediscovered, and purchased in 2018, then transported 2,300 miles to Bruce Kennedy's giant roadside statue preserve in Hayward, California (the lot next to his plastics fabrication business). Bruce intends to restore the figure, though likely without a wagon or the team of horses.
