Atlas shoulders the world of furs at factory prices.

Fur Factory Atlas Statue (Gone)

Field review by the editors.

Anchorage, Alaska

We have seen Atlas, the titan strong man of Greek mythology, shouldering the heavy planet of commerce in a number of places. Perhaps this is the most unusual -- a fur store in Anchorage. The retail building dates from 1962, and Atlas is weary and weather worn. He stands atop the roof, holding up a giant wire frame sphere wrapped in a deteriorating "Fur Factory" sign. The building was recently put on the market.

In 2016 we heard that Atlas was gone; in 2017 indications were that he was removed for re-roofing and would not return.
