Farm Where Herbert Hoover Visited a World Champion Cow
Florence, South Carolina
As U.S. Secretary of Commerce in Roaring 1920s, Herbert Hoover never passed up a chance to promote business, schmooze local celebrities, and get his name in the newspapers. In 1925 Hoover did all three with a visit to Fred Young's dairy farm outside of Florence, South Carolina, where he met Sensation Mikado's Millie, farmer Young's world champion butter-fat cow. According to press accounts at the time, Hoover "expressed his belief that South Carolina held great potential for dairy farming."
Although Hoover later became one of America's worst Presidents, his visit to Young's dairy farm was considered so important to South Carolina that the state has given it a historical marker.
