Eleanor Roosevelt In The Woods
New York, New York
Bronze Eleanor leans against a rock, a thoughtful expression on her face, one hand stroking her chin. Sculpted by Penelope Jencks, unveiled in 1996, it's supposedly the first statue of a real American woman commissioned by New York City. It stands near a now shady spot where Eleanor took her son to see a shantytown during the Great Depression. Quotes from Eleanor and presidential wannabe Adlai Stevenson are inscribed in the pavement around it.
Eleanor Roosevelt died in 1962. in her 74nd street home, only a few blocks north of the site of the monument.
