Grave of Washington's Mom
Fredericksburg, Virginia
George Washington's dad died when he was 11, but his mom, Mary Ball Washington, lived to see him grow up to be President, and has been revered as a model mom ever since. Her grave -- next to her daughter Betty's house -- is marked by a large obelisk. Its construction, begun by men in 1833, was abandoned in ruins. A group of women eventually took over, redesigned the monument, and completed it in 1894. This only reinforced Mary's legacy as an inspiring mother. Behind the obelisk is "Meditation Rock," marked with a plaque, where it's claimed George's mom liked to come to pray for his safety.
