Where President McKinley's Body Lay in State
Buffalo, New York
You have a rare opportunity to stand next to a spot once occupied by an assassinated President's body. A shiny bronze plaque embedded in the center of the main lobby of Buffalo, New York's, Old County Hall, surrounded by velvet ropes, marks the spot where William McKinley lay on September 15, 1901, after being shot by a man who McKinley thought was trying to shake his hand. "Here Lay in State the body of William McKinley, President of the United States." The lobby is supposedly haunted; people clueless about what happened have reported seeing an open casket on the spot.
This is a government building, which means you'll have to go through security -- a lesson that McKinley learned too late -- and photography is forbidden.
