Korean War Memorial
Atlantic City, New Jersey
191,000 New Jerseyans fought in the Korean War, and the New Jersey Korean War Memorial lists the names of all of them who never made it back. War memorials are common community sights, but this one seems odd, wedged as it is between an Atlantic City casino and the Boardwalk, surrounded by tourists thinking about slot machines and the beach.
The Memorial features an eternal flame, sheets of water cascading into reflecting pools, and a wall honoring the five New Jersey Korean War servicemen who were awarded the Medal of Honor. There's also the heroic-size work of sculptors J. Tom Carrillo and Thomas Jay Warren, including a 12-foot-tall bronze "Mourning Soldier," who grimly clutches the dog tags of several of his dead comrades.
