Statues of Andy and Opie

Field review by the editors.

Mount Airy, North Carolina

Andy and Opie Taylor, the fictional North Carolina father and son played in the 1960s by Andy Griffith and future director Ron Howard, are immortalized in bronze on their way to the Mayberry fishin' hole (Sheriff Andy is wearing his uniform and badge, apparently still on duty in super-safe Mayberry).

The statue is a copy of one commissioned by the TVLand network and erected in 2003 in Raleigh, the state capital. There was supposed to be just that one, with TVLand choosing Raleigh over Mount Airy because Raleigh was a big city. But Andy Griffith fans raised such a ruckus -- he was born in Mount Airy and claimed that the town was the inspiration for the fictional Mayberry -- that TVLand made a second statue for Mount Airy. It was unveiled in September 2004.
