Center of Albuquerque 1912

Field review by the editors.

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Finding the exact center of a city -- an unevenly shaped blob -- is a headache for even the most highly trained map professional. But in late 2010 Cliff Wilkie, a geodetic surveyor, took on the challenge of finding the exact center of Albuquerque, his hometown.

His calculations -- as much an art as a science -- led him to determine that this spot was the exact center of the city in 1912, the year that New Mexico became a state. The city was satisfied with his work, and embedded an artistic metal disk on the spot in 2012, New Mexico's 100th birthday.
