Center of Albuquerque 2012

Field review by the editors.

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Finding the exact center of a city -- an unevenly shaped blob -- is a headache for even the most highly trained map professional. But in late 2010 Cliff Wilkie, a geodetic surveyor, took on the challenge of finding the exact center of Albuquerque, his hometown.

His calculations -- as much an art as a science -- led him to determine that this spot was the exact center of the city. Albuquerque was satisfied with his work, and embedded an artistic metal disk on the spot in 2012, New Mexico's 100th birthday.
